Spelling Bee contestants on stage

While many of us have to go search Google or grab a dictionary to help us with spelling, that wasn’t the case for nineteen North Country students as they showed off their spelling prowess at the 36th Annual Scripps Regional Spelling Bee held March 7 at General Brown High School.  Jefferson-Lewis BOCES once again helped facilitate this year’s bee along with sponsorship from the Watertown Daily Times and JRECK Subs.

The annual spelling bee is open to students in grades 4 through 8 and a host of schools in Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence Counties were represented. The winner punching their ticket to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington DC May 28-30.

It was another close bee again this year. Competing students effortlessly spelled out a host of complicated words to the amazement of friends, family and supporters in attendance. It was a horse race till the very end. At which point, Micah Sterling of General Brown claimed the top prize.  This is the third consecutive year that Micah finished first in the regional bee. He will be representing the region in the upcoming Scripps National Spelling Bee. Congratulations to Micah and best of luck in May.

Trophies were given to the top six finalists while all contestants received certificates of appreciation.
